This video is part of a series of courses taught by physiotherapists and Directors of Yoga Synergy, Simon Borg-Olivier and Bianca Machliss, both live (taught throughout the world) as well as part of an online courses at Yoga Synergy (http://anatomy.yogasynergy.com and http://fundamentals.yogasynergy.com) and at RMIT University (http://www.rmit.com). In this video Simon Borg-Olivier explains why you should breathe less than normal in yoga and exercise. Although many breath-control exercises (prânâyâmas) are taught in yoga classes around the world, the essence of prânâyâma is often missed. The essence of prânâyâma is not, as is commonly thought, to breathe more than normal (hyperventilation) as many people do when they practice prânâyâma but to eventually learn how to breathe slightly less than normal (mild hypoventilation). Hyperventilation is breathing more than what is the normal for what activity you are doing at the time.Hypoventilation is breathing less than what is the normal for what activity you are doing at the time. (Remember that people who are considered to be fit hardly breathe at all when they are doing moderate exercise while an 'unfit person will breathe a lot more doing the same exercise) Another aim of prânâyâma is to learn how to use the energy that is in the air that we breathe more effectively to extend our life span in a productive way. As an introduction to breath-control (prânâyâma) we wish to emphasise the need to re-establish 'relaxed natural abdominal (diaphragmatic) breathing'. Once 'relaxed natural abdominal (diaphragmatic) breathing' has been re-learnt then it is possible to learn more complex breath-control such as 'enhanced abdominal (diaphragmatic) breathing', 'chest (thoracic) breathing' and the special combination of these two types of breathing known as 'complete yogic breathing'. Until mastered these special types of breathing initially tend to make people over-breathe (hyperventilate) but if only done for short time and balanced with periods of minimal breathing (as seen in meditation) they can still be useful ways of developing strength and flexibility and helping the body in other ways. The yoga texts advise that it is best to practice these special breath-control exercises alone in a simple posture such as sitting or lying supine. It is not generally recommended to practice 'breath-control exercises' (prânâyâmas) while practicing movement (vinyâsa) and posture (âsana) unless each specific movement (vinyâsa), posture (âsana) and ' breath-control' (prânâyâma) has been mastered individually. Normal ventilation is about 5000ml of air every minute. This is the equivalent of breathing about ten small breaths per minute (or one complete breath per minute) when the body is at rest (while, for example, just sitting comfortably on the floor or on a chair). The effects of hyperventilation include the following: * Reduction in carbon dioxide levels in the body leading to * Vasoconstriction (narrowing) of the blood vessels to the brain and the heart leading to: - dizziness - feinting - sleepiness - rapid heart rate - (finally) unconsciousness * Bronchoconstriction (narrowing) of the bronchiole tubes leading to: - asthma * Reduced blood acidity leading to: - nervous sensitivity - emotional lability - tingling of the fingers and toes - sensation of body heat - excessive hunger (due to the desire to have more acidic foods) - blurring of vision - muscle spasm * Reduced transfer of oxygen from oxyhaemoglobin to the cells (via the Bohr effect) leading to: - less oxygen in the cells - more anaerobic metabolism - supporting growth of anaerobic bacteria and cancer cell - up to 19 times less energy production per unit of glucose used as fuel - increased hunger due to higher usage of sugar For more information please go to http://blog.yogasynergy.com
